The Sweetest Love: Katie & Burt

Today's story comes from a couple that I just adore! They are sweet, kind and so fun to sit down and have a good coffee date with! I love the thought and creativity they have put into their day and cannot wait to deliver their cake this Saturday to see how all the details have come together!

Tell us the story of how you met...
We met at a bar on Capitol Hill...I was there celebrating a friend's birthday and Burt was standing at the bar drinking a martini.  I struck up a conversation with him and sparks flew!

How did you know he/she was 'the one'?
Katie:  I knew from the first or second conversation we had that he was the one.  Our personalities just clicked and he even laughed at my corny jokes:)

Burt:  I knew Katie was the one for me after a long boat trip.  We were trying to dock the boat at the Mukilteo boat launch during high winds and seas.  Katie had to hold the boat while I got the truck and even though there were waves trying to crash the boat into the dock, she managed to keep it from hitting.  When I came back I was sure she was going to be mad and in a terrible mood but she was cheerful and chipper as ever!  That told me a lot about her personality.

How did you get engaged?
Burt decided that we just had to try snow camping this year.  We headed out to Stevens Pass for a snowshoe backpacking trip.  After many wrong turns and an exhausting hike, we set up camp right next to the trail.  After getting the tent up, Burt thought it would be fun to do "avalanche drills" with our avalanche beacons.  He buried his in the snow in a dry bag along with the ring box.  I used my beacon to find his and started digging.  When I dug up a bag I was a little confused until I saw the ring box and Burt down in the snow on both knees.  It was very romantic!

What are you most looking forward to in married life?
We are both excited that we can spend the rest of our lives together jumping from one adventure to the next.

How would you describe the style of your event?
Our wedding is September 15th at the Bybee-Nims Blueberry Farm in North Bend, WA.  We are having a shabby chic/rustic themed wedding taking advantage of the beautiful outdoor location.

What is the style of your wedding cake?  How did you choose it?
We fell in love with the Lambeth piping style and the beautiful detail that it encompasses.

The Sweetest Love: Kassy and Levi

Sweet, sweet love!! Kassy and Levi are the cutest couple and are so in love with each other it is refreshing! Congrats You two!!

MARIAH LINDSAY PHOTOGRAPHY

Story of how we met:
It started with a jacket. Kassandra was looking for connections in Washington, before her move to the NW. She saw a handsome young fellow with a "cool" jacket on facebook through one of her friend's friend list in 2009! almost three years ago!  Friend requested accepted! Kept in contact, started officially dating April 2011, one thing led to another, she moved here in July 2011, engaged 7 months later on March 10th, 2012...When you know you know.

Kassy's favorite thing about Levi:
I would say, his humor. He makes me laugh at the simplest things. It will keep us young

Levi's favorite thing about Kassy:
My favorite thing about Kassy is how comfortable we are around each other. I can just completely be myself and be goofy and say whatever I'm thinking around her. It's easy because I know she is being herself around me all the time. We just get each other and always have a good time.

MARIAH LINDSAY PHOTOGRAPHY

How did we know he/she was the one?
Levi- I knew Kassy was the one when I realized I was spending all my time thinking about her. I had never been that way with anyone before. Since my only way to contact her was online at first, I found myself making excuses to stay home just in case she got online. When she finally came to visit me I was absolutely certain. It didn't take long before I decided i was going to marry her.

Kassy- I knew Levi was the one when I pictured life without him. Instantly I knew, I couldnt live without this amazing human being. He is my best friend. Who wouldn't want to marry their best friend?

How did you get engaged?
We had plans to go to dinner with my brother and sister and Kassy hadn't seen them in a while, she didn't suspect anything. We decided to make a quick stop at Gas Works Park before dinner. Kassy, my brother, sister and I decided to climb to the top of the hill and with  Seattle's lights lighting up the sky behind us, I told Kassy that I had a question for her. Just then it clicked for  Kassy why we might be there and she  playfully punched me in the stomach and said  "No you don't!".....She said yes!!!! That night our dinner reservations were not for the 4 of us, but also for my parents and Kassy's mom at Volterra in Ballard.

Tell us about your wedding:
Our "burlap elegance"  wedding is on July 28th at a close friends backyard garden in Bothell. Our cake is sweet and simple. Wispy buttercream gives it a whimsical nature feel. Raspberry Lemon-aid cake on the top two teirs, and Carrot cake on the bottom. `Perfect for our theme. When we saw the cake at the Seattle Wedding Show, we knew that was the one!

The Sweetest Love: Brittany and Boris

Eeek!! How adorable is this week's couple??!! Brittany contacted me a few months back and I immediately knew I liked her. She has infectious energy and an amazing love for he handsome hubby -to-be, Boris.

This romantic international love story is just what we needed on this rainy Tuesday morning... Enjoy!

Tell us the story of how you met…

To start off, Boris though having a Russian name is actually a Frenchie. He was born and raised in Normandy, France and came to America on a working Visa when he was 24. It was his first time in the US and to integrate himself into American culture he used Craigslist to find a roommate (Graham) in Capitol Hill.

Myself, I am a born and raised Midwest girl from southwest Michigan (Kalamazoo to be exact.. yes it REALLY is a real place, or as we like to say "Yes, there really is a Kalamazoo!") I originally came to Seattle to go to UW at the age of 18. After dropping out from pursuing an art degree for about 2yrs, trying cosmetology school for about 8 months, and then working as a manager at a fitness club; I returned to Michigan until I was 24 and able to gain independent financial aid to go back to school in Washington. When I met Boris I was in my first year at The Art Institute of Seattle for a BS in fashion marketing.

One January evening in 2009, Boris and I happened to be at a houseparty for a friend of mine from UW. Boris' roommate Graham knew said friend and he brought Boris to the party. After Boris' first try at beer pong and a keg stand, we were smitten :) The rest is "history" as they say.

How did you know he/she was ‘the one’?

I was in love with Boris from the beginning, and we spent nearly every day together after our first "official" date. This made him moving back to France in July of 2010 a huge hardship as I was still living in Seattle until I finished my degree. At the end of July, I went to visit him in France. The first morning I woke up at his parent's house (in the countryside of Normandy) and saw his mom making homemade jam in the backyard and his dad climbing the cherry tree behind her to pick fresh fruit for lunch. After that, we spent the week in Paris where I met all of his friends at a picnic in front of the Eiffel Tower. It was during this trip that I realized how much being with Boris had openend my eyes to  whole new world and way of living; I couldn't imagine ever going anywhere else without him. Experiencing things with him by my side makes each and every moment more special and vivid. Without him, it is like living in shades of gray. As cheesey as it sounds, it's almost as if I was Dorothy in Kansas before we met and now I am experiencing the world as she did in Oz-in full technicolor.

How did you get engaged?

We actually decided to get married after Boris came to visit me here in Seattle from Toronto (where he is currently living) for my birthday last October. When he left, I was devastated. Our relationship was so confused and we both finally realized that we could not live without each other and that marriage was the way to ensure we could always be at the same place at the same time. The next visit Boris made a month later, I was expecting a proposal the entire weekend. FINALLY, at 11pm Sunday night (he was leaving early Monday morning) he made me dinner and sat me down on the couch. He made a heartfelt speech, that I of course giggled at and gave him a hard time about while he told me to "Shhhh" and "Be quie so I can finish!"... smiling at the end, he pulled a GIANT "rock" out of his pocket.. yep it was an actual stone that was tied with wire on an adjustable band that he had bought at Urban Outfitters. His comment was, "Well, you said you wanted a big rock! :)" We laughed, I said yes and then picked out my ACTUAL ring a few months later.

What are you most looking forward to in married life?

Living in the same country so we can once again wake up next to each other every morning.

When and where is your wedding? How would you describe the style of your event?

July 1, 2012 @ the Washington Arboretum and Poco Wine Room. We are doing everything EXTREMELY casual and basing the color scheme on hydrangeas in blues and purples. We are both very interested in fashion, so all the groomsmen and bridesmaids are dressed in a general scheme but with very different colors, patterns, and styles. So, you could call it "purposeful clashing". My dress and some of the decor really throws back to the 1950's that is contrasted with an organic and simplistic modern feel.

What is the style of your wedding cake?  How did you choose it?

We did a simple two-tier wedding cake that has fresh hydrangeas in the middle of the tiers and on the top. The fun part is that we made a smaller cake and then cupcakes for the guests with awesome frosting that is actually shaped and colored like small hydrangea flowers.
We wanted to do something unique while still working within our budget as our wedding is self-funded. Kara was awesome with keeping to our budget and still offering us ideas that will make the cake/cupcakes all our own!

The Sweetest Love: Sarah & Andrew

Have I mentioned that I LOVE my job? I couldn't imagine anything more fun than creating tasty treats for amazing clients like Sarah & Andy.

I first met Sarah and her (adorable) mom back in January at The Seattle Wedding Show.  They were excited and sweet, just my kind of gals. As I have gotten to know Sarah and Andrew these past 6 months, I like them even more each day. Here are a few awesome things about this couple:

  • Sarah works for a cruise line spending her winters in Mexico (ole!) and her summers in Alaska (Salmon, yum!).
  • Andrew is the one of those grooms that I love meeting with. He has an opinion and wants to share it.... Men- take note, we women like this!
  • These two are not afraid to have a little fun with their cake. One of the flavors their guests will be loving this coming weekend is Margarita (sans salt).
Let's hear what Sarah has to say about these two sweetie pies...

Tell us the story of how you met…
We met while attending college at Western Washington university in 2005

How did you know he/she was ‘the one’?
I always knew there was something special/different about him...and I was "that" girl in the dorms that he always wanted to talk to.
How did you get engaged?
On July 3, 2011, we were at my favorite place in the world: my family’s cabin in the San Juans. After over 6 months of teasing me with proposal talk I was really hoping it would be the time and the place. We woke up, bickered about who would play the games on the back of the cereal box, then went to the beach. Andy steered me to the “sunset tree,” which leans out over the water. It seemed the air itself changed as he began to propose. He dropped to his knee and finally asked me to marry him. I said no out of complete shock but of course meant yes! It was perfect without being cliche...what more could a girl ask for!?

What are you most looking forward to in married life?
We are looking forward to keeping each other feeling happy and light in spirit. By laughing our way through the rollercoaster of life we can't go wrong!
When and where is your wedding?
We are getting married at Lord Hill Farms in Snohomish on Sunday June 24th
What is the style of your wedding cake?
Our wedding cake is simple, and whimsical. With succulents and peonies as decorative aspects against the wispy buttercream, it feels rustic and romantic. Love it!

The Sweetest Love: Kristen and Kyle

There are no words to describe how excited we are about Kristen & Kyle's wedding cake for tomorrow! This cake has been in our dreams since the bride, groom and I designed it back in January.  Can't wait to show you how it turns out...

Take a minute to read about these high school sweethearts that have been about this day for years. Enjoy!!

Tell us the story of how you met…
We knew each other from the same group of friends in high school. Junior year he asked me to prom and the rest was history. I’m lucky to say I am marrying my best friend.

How did you get engaged?
At my favorite winery, Benson Winery at Lake Chelan, WA on a beautiful day. There was snow on the ground and he wanted to go outside. We were sitting outside sipping our wine overlooking the lake when he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!
When and where is your wedding?
June 16, 2012 on the shores of Fox Island, WA.

Do you have a theme for your wedding?
Beachy
What is the style of your wedding cake? How did you choose it?
Romantic and Whimsical. We choose the simplicity of an all white cake. Kyle said the parts of the cake reminded him of waves, fitting the beach theme. We also chose this cake for the ability to include a gluten and dairy free top tier. Overall it was unique and fun.

The Sweetest Love: Cathy and Nick

Hello SweetSiders,
We are so darn excited for this week since it officially kicks off our 2012 wedding season!  We know how much y'all like to see pictures of our wedding cakes, but we are often asked questions about the couples behind the desserts. If you are as curious as some of your fellow TSS followers, then this series is for you!

We have asked each of our couples to answer a few questions so you can get to know them. Their answers will be posted the week or two before their big day and you can follow along during the week as we create their cake or dessert bar!

Now, onto the good stuff; join me in wishing our first couple, Cathy and Nick a Happy Wedding Week! These two are a blast to spend time with, I find myself in such a great mood after each meeting with them. They are creative,  gracious and freaking adorable.

We are creating two gigantic Sweet Bite Bars for these two along with a center cutting cake that you can read more about below!

Tell us the story of how you met…

We met when Cathy started attending self-defense classes at Krav
Maga, where Nick is an instructor. I guess you could thank the guy who
tried to attack Cathy in her office building for getting us
together...We became really close friends at first, always going out
to eat together, and finally Nick had the courage to officially ask
Cathy out on a “real date.”

Cathy, tell us your favorite thing about Nick…

Nick has always provided me with a safe zone, to be myself and not
worry. He’s honest with me and will call me out if I need it. He’s
so easy to talk to and so real - it’s refreshing! But if I had to
pick one favorite thing...it’s the fact that he’s so funny! We can
laugh for hours together.

Nick, tell us your favorite thing about Cathy…

It’s her strength. She’s the strongest woman I know. It’s also
her timing. When I’m at my worst she always does the best things for
me at the perfect moment. And she’s pretty hot too!

How did you know he/she was ‘the one’?

Nick: I knew she was the one because even we she saw me at my worst,
she still loved who I was. She was my best friend and I just knew that
I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.

Cathy: I always had a gut feeling really, but my fate was sealed when
we went on a trip to Los Angeles together (where Nick is from) and I
got to see where he grew up, where he went to school, and then we ate
at so many fun places...and the fact that he took me to see my
favorite singer, Shakira, in concert even though it probably cost him
some “man points”.

How did you get engaged?

Nick surprised me with a trip up to Kerry Park on Queen Anne Hill
before the Cirque de Soleil Michael Jackson Immortal show. It’s one
of our favorite places to sit and take in the view. He proposed and
then we celebrated with dinner at the Book Bindery before the show.
Amazing.

What are you most looking forward to in married life?

Nick: Actually getting to spend time together! Our honeymoon to South
Africa. Cooking meals together.

Cathy: We work so much that being married will actually mean we get
to see each other more! I’m very excited about that. I’m looking
forward to getting to just relax and live life with him. All the ups
and downs, the little things, the big things - everything!

When and where is your wedding?

May 25th, 2012 at Urban Light Studios

What is the style of your wedding cake? How did you choose it?

Simple but fun - Kara helped with all the design aspects of it and we
used my wedding dress as inspiration.
